No, it was not the Rand dropping, it were actually real Earthquakes that shook Gauteng yesterday!
Many people across South Africa have reported feeling an earthquake yesterday evening, which is likely to have its epicentre in Botswana. Reports suggest that the tremors felt in South Africa were the result of a magnitude 6.5 earthquake which struck north of Gaborone in Botswana. One person in Sandton said the tremor was strong enough to shake lights and move chairs around the floor. Durban residents said the tremor lasted for nearly a minute.
Storm Report SA said the earthquake hit Botswana near Gope, about 300km north of Gaborone. “The estimated energy released was 707.9 Terajoules, which is 0.168 megatons explosives,” said Storm Report SA. It said the tremors were felt as far as Richards Bay in KwaZulu-Natal, Griekwastad in the Northern Cape, and Graskop in Mpumalanga.
This is the second tremor to hit South Africa in the past 24 hours. On 3 April, a 4.6 magnitude earth tremor hit parts of Gauteng and the North West. The tremor, which was 2km deep, was recorded at 05:08 on Monday. It originated near a gold mining area in Klerksdorp.
