A military uprising is reportedly underway in Mali, as the reports of gun battles at a military base and arrests of prominent politicians and high-ranking military officers are pouring in. The mutiny apparently started following weeks of protests calling for the president to resign.
There have been several reports of gunfire at a base in Kati, near the capital Bamako, which was the initial launch site of a 2012 coup d’etat. Social media posts indicate army roadblocks on routes into the town.
It remains unclear how much of the military has mutinied, though an unnamed security source merely stated: “Yes, mutiny. The military has taken up arms.”
