RENAMO not “taking to war” to take part in October Elections

Ivone Soares, member of the Mozambique National Resistance (RENAMO) Political Commission announced in Quelimane, the capital of Zambezia Province, that his party will be participating in the general elections scheduled to take place on 15 October, adding that it intends to win. She made that disclosure during an expanded meeting with her party’s district delegates and members of the Provincial Assembly.

She did not specify, however, whether that will hinge on a review of the current electoral legislation, one of the points under discussion in talks with the government. The RENAMO meeting will also discuss and approve the party’s action plan for 2014 and elect new RENAMO representatives in Zambezia Province, among other issues.

Soares further disclosed that Renamo’s election preparation process will also include monitoring ! voter registration throughout the country. In another development, Soares – a RENAMO Member of Parliament (MP) for the Zambezia Province electoral circle in the National Assembly – rejected the notion that her party was responsible for ongoing political and military tension in the country. Soares says Renamo will never turn to war to attain its aims. “The military instability that has been observed in several parts of the country was a way of persuading the government to engage in serious dialogue with RENAMO, as that is the only way to reach consensus, and the population will be the winner,” she said.
